Christianity was established as the “official state religion” of Russia in 988. The development of the orthodox worship service and music is a rich heritage of religious fervor and expression. Sergei Rachmaninoff, the great composer of orchestral and piano music, composed this unaccompanied music for the “All-Night Vigil” or “Vespers” service in the Russian Orthodox Church in 1915. The texts and music are for the liturgy of a night-long service celebrated in Russian monasteries and on the eves of holy days. This will be the upstate premier performance of this beautiful, sacred work. The Chorale will sing in the original Russian language.
