There are many ways for you to support
The Peace Center for the Performing Arts-- Become a volunteer!
You can support the arts and education by becoming a
POP! volunteer.
Each year, volunteer ushers help shepherd over 60,000 Upstate school children
attending performances with their classmates. Peace Outreach Program volunteers
guide children safely on and off school buses, help them find their seats,
and assist teachers during the performance.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Peace Outreach Program (POP!) fulfills one-third of The Peace Center's
mission by fostering a life-long appreciation for the arts through comprehensive
education and outreach programs for children, educators and adults.
Each season, POP! reaches nearly 70,000 students, teachers
and parents from across Upstate South Carolina, as well as parts of Georgia
and North Carolina.
The Peace Center’s Education and Outreach department
is dedicated to serving the community through:
- Student matinee performances that are tied to the
curriculum and designed to introduce students to the performing arts.
- Professional development for teachers, including
the Summer Teacher Institute and arts integration workshops held throughout
the school year.
- Backstage tours, lectures and workshops for
adults and families, and much more.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT VOLUNTEERING
Why should I volunteer with The Peace Center?
The Peace Center is committed to bringing the arts to everyone—especially
children! Through the Peace Outreach Program, Upstate schools can provide
students of all ages with the unforgettable experience of attending a
live theatrical performance. This million-dollar program impacts nearly
70,000 students and teachers each year, in great part thanks to the support
of businesses and individuals across the region. The POP! volunteer corps
plays a crucial role in making this possible. In fact, in 2005, volunteers
logged in over 1,900 hours of service in support of The Peace Center.
What type of time commitment can I expect?
The great thing about volunteering with The Peace Center is that you can
decide what works best with your schedule. Almost all volunteer opportunities
will take place during regular office hours (9:00am-5:30pm). When volunteering
to usher at POP! performances, you’ll be needed from around 9am
to 1:30pm. But you can decide which dates work best for you depending
on your schedule and what shows you’d most like to see.
What types of volunteer opportunities are available?
The Peace Center has many programs that can use your help. The Education
department has the greatest need for volunteers, relying primarily on
their assistance as ushers at over 100 daytime student performances throughout
the season. But additional departments ask volunteers to provide administrative
support in other ways. The Marketing and Development programs often need
help with mailings, research and phone calls; the Accounting department
with filing; and House Management occasionally needs volunteer ushers
for evening and weekend performances. Whatever your interest, there’s
a role you can play as a Peace Center volunteer.
