Engage with our learning community! The Peace Center provides professional development programs for arts specialists, teaching artists, and classroom teachers.

Peace Passport Field Trip Series Professional Development

Ongoing

Peace Passport Series professional development empowers teachers with a deeper understanding of program content for more successful implementation of the Peace Passport curricular materials in the classroom. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion for one hour of out-of-district PD credit for each session.

South Carolina Teaching Artist Professional Development for Certification

March 30-31, 2020

Teaching Artist Certification provides teaching artists the professional tools and practical skills to create the richest possible arts education experience for learners of all backgrounds. This new standardized professional development program grants participants Certified Teaching Artist status in the South Carolina Arts Commission Arts Directory. The program will bolster the creative process and strategic implementation of arts residencies that Teaching Artists can provide in classrooms for students and teachers.

Joint Arts Administrators Institute

June 17-18, 2020

Teaching and Best Practices: Dance, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts
The goal of the 2019-2020 Joint Arts Administrators Institute is to provide administrators with a deep dive into the four arts disciplines by examining the nuts and bolts of successful programs as outlined in the Opportunity to Learn (OTL) standards for each national arts organization. In addition, administrators will spend time looking at the SC OTL standards and provide feedback on how those could be updated.

Summer Teacher Institute

June 22-26, 2020

Integrating Arts and Literacy
The Summer Teacher Institute is designed for elementary school classroom teachers and arts specialists who wish to explore strategies for integrating arts in literacy instruction. Educators will be introduced to creative approaches for teaching reading and writing with a focus on fluency, expression, and comprehension. Topics explored will include a variety of music and drama concepts integrated with English/Language Arts, such as: Defining Arts Integration, Reader’s Theatre, Tableau Strategies for Deepening Comprehension, and Word Painting.
