S.G. Goodman is a farmer’s daughter, a born-and-bred Kentuckian, and a singer-songwriter.
As a gay woman who grew up on the banks of the Mississippi River in one of the most isolated parts of Kentucky, S.G. Goodman has the unique perspective of the insider who is also the outsider. Her songwriting seeks to carve a space for yourself in a place that you were born to, despite it not reflecting your feelings. After coming out, S.G. struggled with suicidal thoughts but didn’t want to seek refuge somewhere else. She wanted to stay and make music that saves her. Her debut album Old Time Feeling does just that by exploring the way most people see the South without fully understanding its complexities.
Her vocals are just as powerful as her lyrics. My Morning Jacket front man and S.G. Goodman’s co-producer Jim James recalls feeling spellbound when he first heard her. S.G.’s sings with conviction, something she learned attending Southern Baptist Church three times a week as a child. It’s the truth in her music and the way she delivers it that not only brings the listener in, but has them feeling it too.
“...Perhaps more important is what she’s saying on issues that affect working class folks in rural areas. I think she could play an important role in the healing we need to see happen right now. She’s living proof that we can be whoever we want to be, no matter where we come from.” – Grammy-nominated Jim James, lead singer of My Morning Jacket
“An untamed rock & roll truth teller.” - Rolling Stone
“A farmer’s daughter with a punk past whose rowdy, rootsy country music
straddles the vintage twang of Patsy Cline and haunted balladry of Angel Olsen.” - The Guardian
“Goodman’s prevailing tone involves less rage than it does forgiveness—which,
more than any Kentucky lilt, makes the young singer appear refreshingly out of step with these divisive times.” - New Yorker
“Goodman takes that ‘old time feeling’ and really tears it up in the best way possible.” - NPR Music
